Candida Royalle, known for her internationally acclaimed line of woman-friendly erotic films, returned triumphant from her trip to Berlin where she was honored for her pioneering work in paving the way for women to create female-centered adult films at the first ever ‘PorYes’Feminist Porn Awards.
Also honored at PorYes was European director, Petra Joy, whose newest feature, “Feeling It!”, is being released by Candida Royalle under her Femme Productions label.
Royalle also presented an overview of her Femme line of films at the fourth annual PornFilmFestBerlin, an international gathering of filmmakers showing and viewing erotic-themed media from cutting edge experimental to documentary to explicit features.
Royalle introduced a series of clips to show the evolution of her film line that includes 18 features in 25 years. Inspired by the enthusiastic response, she is working on a compilation of scenes from her body of work that will include an option to hear her talk about each scene, including interesting behind the scenes anecdotes and why she chose to include each particular scene.
Royalle kicked off her stay in Berlin at the International Venus Erotic Fair where her celebrated line of Natural Contours designer vibes was on display. With her at their elegant booth were her Dutch designer and representatives of the Natural Contours sales team.
Royalle, a sought after speaker on women’s sexuality and free speech, is a member of the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT), author of “How to Tell a Naked Man What to Do: Sex Advice from a Woman who Knows”(Simon & Schuster), and a founding board member of Feminists for Free Expression (FFE).

These two new releases in the adult industry couldn’t be much more different. On the left is Without Restraint from Playgirl, a film being marketed in the “For Ladies” category and featuring performers who appear to have stepped straight out of the pages of a romance novel. At right (but really out of left field, in a good way) is Eon McKai’s Content from Vivid Alt, a decidedly more hardcore and yet somewhat cerebral alt porn flick that features anal, among other things. I’m wondering if a glamour movie that’s supposed to be for women will really appeal to women who actually watch porn more than a down-and-dirty but very artistically rendered hardcore flick. What you think looks hotter will depend greatly on what kind of person you are, I know… for me, despite the raunchier action, I’m going to have to go with Content for its sheer audacity of purpose and a much more alternative-friendly cast, but I wouldn’t kick Without Restraint out of bed either. I’m always excited to see a new Burning Angel release. Punk Rock Pussy Cat Dolls is another new entry in the fantastic alt-porn pioneer Joanna Angel‘s filmography. LOS ANGELES — Adult studio Pink Visual today announced that Brand Product Manager Kim Kysar will participate in the Lesbian X Rated panel discussion to be held Tuesday at the USC.
Presented by the USC College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, the Lesbian X Rated panel will include Kysar, documentary filmmaker Michelle Johnson and Roxxie from CyberDyke.net.
Organizers describe the event as an “academic discussion about the gender complexities and sexual eroticism of females in pornography.” It will focus on the difference between lesbian pornography intended for a lesbian audience, and that created primarily for a straight male audience. Video reels depicting the different forms of lesbian pornography also will be screened.
“I’m really looking forward to taking part in this discussion and screening, meeting my esteemed fellow panelists, and interacting with what I’m sure will be a very engaged, enthusiastic audience,” Kysar said. “I’m sure there will be a bit of controversy along the way, as whenever you discuss pornography.
“Even in an open-minded, academic way, there’s bound to be some strong and contrasting opinions expressed. I’m anticipating a lively, substantive discussion, for sure.”

A new collection of erotic short stories has arrived at just the right time to get swept up in the Twilight/True Blood vampire frenzy. The difference between Edward Cullen and the vampires and other horrors you’ll find in Bitten (edited by Susie Bright) is that the latter are not afraid to bare their teeth. First, the above-the-waist photos of “feminine†male models, which Filament‘s editors said academic research proved women are attracted to, were not pornographic enough for us. Sorry, but Rufus Wainwright clones don’t make us hot. Fortunately, the mag listened to the complaints and is trying to, um, fluff their content by including guys with erections in the next issue. But now Filament‘s publisher has stated it will not allow them to print pictures of aroused men. [Guardian UK]
According to an entry on Filament‘s LiveJournal, after the magazine stated its intention to do a series of photos depicting men with erections, their printer wrote them to say:
“I can now herein formally confirm that we would NOT want to print material of this nature, which although likely to perhaps only cause offense to a small number of actual staff, may unfortunately create much bigger and more serious far reaching problems for us with other clients—particularly those in the women’s/religious sectors, who could potentially withdraw their own work in protest as a result.â€
The editors of Filament added that they cannot change publishers because this particular printer is 30 percent cheaper than the others. So, we guess there’ll be no peen for us girls. Rats!
We understand that losing other customers is a legitimate problem for a printing business to be concerned about. But we can’t help but be cynical and wonder if the publisher would have had the same problem if Filament was a (far more common) porn mag for men with pics of naked women? Is the problem just that Filament is porn, which, presumably the publisher knew when it took the magazine on as a client? Or is the problem that some people just can’t handle the idea of chicks being as sexually ravenous as dudes?

Nielsen measures use of the internet just as it gauges the popularity of TV shows, and it has found that one in three visitors to porn websites is female. One such site user spoke to WTVJ for this article, quoted:
“I think women are more open with their sexuality,” she says. “I watch it alone. It gives you different positions and lets you be more creative with your loved one, helps keep the relationship spiced up.”
Adult film used to be accessible only to men, especially in the 1920s when it all got started. We’ve talked before about women becoming more avid fans of porn, but the article gets a little more interesting when sexologist Marilyn Volker likens women’s relatively newfound access to porn to other equal rights:
“Part of this, in women’s history, is just like the right to vote. Many women are saying ‘I want to be able to watch’,” she claims.
I don’t know about you, but I’m all for equality in porn just as in everything else in life.
Although Dr. Volker isn’t trying to pretend that all porn is sex-positive from a woman’s point of view, she thinks that there is plenty of adult film that can be great for women’s sexuality. And I’ve definitely noticed more porn for women by women, such as just about anything Nica Noelle ever does, especially her Sweet Sinner imprint (and I can safely say that I think a lot of my female friends would love it).

CNN’s just reprinted an article for OPRAH.com about the porn viewing habits of women. With adult films specifically for ladies becoming more common, it’s still a little bit of a surprise to see CNN and Oprah talking about it. As it happens more and more, though, maybe more women will become less squeamish. As that happens, the porn will get better and maybe less cliched. (It’s a well-known fact that guys will jerk off to things that we girls will just find laughable, because women are more discriminating about erotic stimulation.) Studios like Sweet Sinner will hopefully become more common and produce smut for ladies to get off to instead of laughing at.
